.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (Service Pack 1) changes to ViewState causes stability issues in Sitecore products

I just received the email below from Sitecore regarding stability issues that .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (Service Pack 1) is causing with all Sitecore products. I am glad they sent this out. Hopefully the companies using Sitecore products will see it before they install the Service Pack and lose a lot of time with the issues it is causing.

There are a couple questions that come to mind, but the first one is this the only product that will have problems?

If you are using a product that is built on top of ASP.NET you may need to be very careful. The bug described and the issues with it have not been reported specifically yet. It has simply been described as a “bug in the LosFormatter class (System.Web.UI.LosFormatter in System.Web.dll, used to serialize and deserialize an ASP.NET ViewState).”

ASP.NET MVC is looking more interesting all the time. Just have to wait for the rest of the marketplace to get it integrated into their products.

Just because I think Vanessa Ho should go check out Hempfest, that doesn’t mean I’m going to Hempfest. If I were getting stoned todayand I’m not saying that I am (or that I’m not)I would be getting stoned in West Seattle, on Alki beach, where there’s some sort of beach volleyball tournament going on.

last year facebook had to shelve plans for beacon, the advertising platform that told your friends what you were buying. but while still evaluate zuckerberg has admitted that facebook screwed up beacon’s implementation, the idea behind it remains intriguing. the ability to share your purchasing history, or kind preferences — with your permission — could be a exceedingly strong tool for marketers.

Now a slew of third-party apps are taking their own crack at the same concept. And they’re doing a pretty good job with it. Here are four that we’ve seen, and we assume there are more; if there’s one that you particularly like, let us know in comments:

The idea of recommending products to your friends is a good one, and Beacon could have made it work - if it was opt-in. But Facebook apps are inherently opt-in (you have to add an app if you want it), so that solves that problem. Who’s going to turn this into a real business?
